Organize categories and groups
Add, rename, group and archive the categories the household budgets with, and know which built-in ones the app manages for you.

This is for the grown-up tidying up the list of categories that transactions and the budget are sorted into.
Open Categories
On a phone:
- Go to More.
- Tap “Categories”.
On a computer, Categories sits in the sidebar instead of More.
What you start with
A new family gets 14 categories: Housing, Utilities, Groceries, Dining, Transport, Kids, Health, Fun, Shopping, Gifts, Subscriptions and Other as expenses, plus Salary and Other income as income. Income categories sit under “Income”; expense categories sit in their groups, or under “Ungrouped” until you place them.
The app adds 10 more that are marked “Built in”. Three of them, Allowance, Chores and Bonus, can be picked when you record a transaction. The rest, such as transfers, interest, fees and investment gains or losses, are posted by the app on its own. Built-in categories cannot be renamed, moved, archived or deleted.
Add a category or a group
Tap “Add category” in the header, or open a group’s menu and tap “Add category here”. The sheet asks for a “Name”, a “Type” (Expense or Income) and, for an expense, a “Group”. Tap “Create”.
To add a group, tap “Add group”, enter a “Group name” and tap “Create”.
Rename, move and archive
Every category row has a menu with “Rename”, “Move to group”, “Archive” and “Delete”. Income categories do not offer “Move to group”, since groups are for expenses.
Archiving is the usual way to retire a category. “Archive {name}?” explains: “It leaves the pickers and the budget. Its history stays, and you can unarchive it later.” Archiving also turns off any import categorization rules that point at the category, and unarchiving does not turn them back on; switch them on again under More › Imports › “Categorisation rules” if you still want them (see Import a bank or card statement file). A group can be archived too, once it is empty; until then the menu says “Move or archive its categories first”.
Archived items collect at the bottom under “Archived (n)”. Tap “Show” to list them and “Unarchive” to bring one back.
When Delete is not offered
Deleting is only for a category that has never been used. Tap “Delete” on one that has transactions, budget amounts or an import categorization rule, even a turned-off one, and the app shows “{name} is in use”: “It has transactions or budgets, so it cannot be deleted. Archiving hides it from the pickers and the budget while keeping its history.” Tap “Archive instead”.
Categories feed the budget table in Assign every dollar, and a purchase can be spread across several of them; see Split a transaction.
