Settle a jar

Settling is how a grown-up hands a kid real money and records that the jar was paid out.

Last updated 23 Sep 2026

This is for the grown-up handing a kid cash or a bank payment for money a jar already owes them.

What settling means

A jar is a record of what the household owes the kid. Settling records that some of it was handed over in cash or from a bank account. On the kid’s own feed, this shows up as “A grown-up handed you cash from {bucket}”. It is one of two hand-over rows; the other, “A grown-up paid for {reason}”, is an approved ask (see ask a grown-up for money). Money coming in reads “Payday” or “Your savings grew”.

Settle

To settle a jar:

  1. Go to Kids.
  2. Choose the kid.
  3. Tap “Settle” on the jar’s row. Spend, Save and Give each have their own, and it pre-selects that jar.
  4. Under “Which jar?”, switch jars if you need to. The line below reads “{bucket} holds {amount}”.
  5. Enter the “Amount” (never more than the jar holds).
  6. Choose “Paid from”, an active cash or bank account. With none set up, the app says “Add a cash or bank account first — that is where the money comes from.”
  7. The “Date” starts as today, typed as YYYY-MM-DD; add a “Note (optional)” if you like.
  8. Tap “Confirm”.

What it does to the budget

The money leaves the cash or bank account and the jar in the same posting, so the Home hero’s “{amount} held for the kids”, the “The kids’ jars” section on Accounts (“Owed to {names} · read only”) and the jar itself always agree.
