Ask to spend from a jar

A kid asks for money out of a jar, a grown-up says yes or no, and nothing leaves the jar until it is approved.

This is for the kid asking for money out of a jar, with a look at what the grown-up sees when the ask arrives. It covers sending, taking back, approving and declining.

Send the ask

  1. On the home screen, tap “Ask to spend”. The Spend jar offers the same button, and the Give jar offers “Ask to give”.
  2. Under “What do you want to ask for?”, pick a jar under “Take it from”: Spend, Save or Give. The line beneath says how much that jar has in it, and the amount can never go above it.
  3. Fill in “What’s it for?”, up to 140 characters.
  4. With two or more grown-ups in the family, “Who should I ask?” lets the kid pick one.
  5. Tap “Send the ask”.

The footer says it plainly: “Nothing leaves your jars until a grown-up says yes.”

The kid then lands on “Asks”, split into “Waiting · {count}” and “Answered”. A row reads “Sent to {name} · {when}” or “Waiting on a grown-up”, and later “{name} said yes · {day}” or “{name} said no · {day}”, plus “{name} wrote: “{reason}”” if a reason was given.

Take it back

While an ask waits, “Take it back” asks “Take this ask back?” and explains: “It leaves the grown-ups’ list. You can always ask again.” The row then reads “You took this back”.

Approve or decline

The grown-up the kid picked gets a push titled “{kid} asked”; with nobody picked, every grown-up does, and either may decide. The ask sits in the Approvals inbox under “Money to approve · {count}” and in the “Asks” section of the kid’s detail screen. Approve or send back a chore covers how to reach Approvals.

Each row reads “Out of {jar} · {when}” with “Not this time” and “Approve {amount}”. If the jar no longer holds enough, the approve button is off and the row ends “Not enough right now.”

Approving opens “Approve this ask?”, shows what the jar has and what this leaves, and asks “Paid from”, a cash or bank account. Tap “Confirm”. Like settling a jar, the money leaves that account and the jar in one posting. The kid’s feed reads “A grown-up paid for {reason}” and the kid gets a push titled “Yes!”.

Declining opens “Not this time”: “{name} will see this on their ask. Nothing leaves the jar.” Add a note under “Want to say why? (optional)”, at most 140 characters, and tap “Send”. The kid’s push is titled “Not this time”.

Limits

At most five asks can wait at once; the next one is refused with “You already have 5 asks waiting. Take one back first.”
