Add and edit accounts

Add cash, bank, card, loan and investment accounts, fill in card and loan details after creating them, and archive an account once it is empty.

Last updated 23 Sep 2026

This is for the grown-up setting up the accounts the household spends from and owes on.

Add an account

To add one:

  1. Go to Accounts.
  2. Tap “Add”.
  3. On “New account”, enter a “Name”.
  4. Pick a “Type”: Cash, Bank, Credit card, Loan or Investment. Bank is selected to start.
  5. Enter an “Opening balance”. For a card or a loan the field is “Amount owed” instead, with the note “What you owe today, as a positive number.”
  6. Tap “Add account”.

The kids’ jars are not on this list. A jar is created with its kid, and the Accounts screen shows them read only under “The kids’ jars”.

What the Accounts screen shows

The number at the top is labeled “Everything, less what you owe”. Below it, accounts sit in three sections: “Accounts”, “Owed” and “The kids’ jars”.

Edit an account

Open an account and tap “Edit” to reach “Edit account”. The type cannot change after creation, but this is where the type-specific details live:

  • Credit card: “Credit limit”, a statement day and a due day.
  • Loan: “APR %”, “Minimum payment”, a due day and “Lender”.
  • Investment: “Institution (optional)”.

A statement day or due day is a day of the month from 1 to 28, so it never drifts in a short month. The field’s hint reads 1–31, but 29, 30 and 31 are refused when you save, so pick 28 for a card that cuts at month end. Once a card has both, its account screen shows a line in the form “Statement {amount} · due {due}”. An APR can carry up to four decimal places.

Tap “Save changes” when you are done.

Archive an account

At the bottom of “Edit account”, “Archive account” asks “Archive this account?” and explains: “It leaves your lists but keeps its history.” Confirm with “Yes, archive it”. An archived account no longer takes statement uploads.

Fill it from a statement file

A bank or card account, but not a kid’s jar, can take the OFX, QFX or CSV file your bank exports, uploaded from the web app under More › “Imports”; each row becomes a transaction only when you confirm it. See Import a bank or card statement file.

Only an account with a zero balance can be archived. If something is still in it, record the last transaction or move the money out first; see Split a transaction for recording spending. A kid’s jar is never archived from here; it goes with the kid, and its money is handled as described in Settle a jar.
