Set a savings goal

A kid names what they are saving for and how much it costs. Progress comes from the Save jar, and there is nothing to approve.

This is for the kid setting up their own savings goal, with a look at what a grown-up sees and what happens once it is reached.

Make the goal

To start a goal:

  1. Go to Goals.
  2. Tap “Start a new goal”. The Save jar’s own screen offers the same button.
  3. Fill in “What are you saving for?” and “How much does it cost?”.
  4. Pick a picture under “Give it a picture” (six choices).
  5. Tap “Save this goal”.

A footnote on the form says it plainly: “A grown-up will see your new goal, but they don’t have to approve it.”

How progress works

Progress is the Save jar’s balance measured against the target. It updates live and never reads above 100%. Save growth a grown-up pays into the jar counts toward it like any other money in Save; see pay growth on the Save jar.

Under the form, a helper line reads “Nothing is locked — you can change this any time.” The goal card itself reads “Keep going” until there is a date to show. After a full month or more of saving, both switch to “On track for {date}”, worked out from the average money that came into Save over the last three whole months (the current month is not counted).

When it is reached

When the balance meets the target, the Jars home shows “You got the {title}” and “You saved {amount}. Ask a grown-up to hand you the money.”, once per goal on each device. The goal then moves to “Already got there” on the Goals screen, stamped “Reached {Month Year}”. On the grown-up’s side, the kid’s detail shows “Reached — hand over the money”, and Home’s “Goals” section keeps the goal with a “Reached” tag for 30 days. That hand-off is what settling a jar is for.

Limits

Only one goal can be active at a time. Starting a second one shows “Finish or delete your current goal first.” Goals attach only to the Save jar; there is no way to set one against Spend or Give. Deleting a goal asks “Delete this goal?” and answers the worry itself: “Your money stays in Save. Only the goal goes.”
